Electrical

What is a GFCI and how does it work?

A GFCI is an electronic device for protecting people from serious injury due to electric shock. It constantly monitors electricity flowing in a circuit. If the electricity flowing into a circuit differs by even a slight amount from that returning, the GFCI will quickly shut off the current flowing through that circuit. The advantage of using a GFCI is that it can detect even small variations in the amount of leakage current, even amounts too small to activate a fuse or circuit breaker. A GFCI works quickly, so it can help protect consumers from severe electric shocks and electrocution.

Plumbing

Why do I hear water running in my toilet tank?

The fill valve in the tank has a leak in it. If the fill valve has been replaced recently it is possible that it has been set too high. If the fill valve is old, it could do you no harm to replace it. Sometimes the shaft or wire that is used to set the level, corrodes off. By replacing it your problem should be fixed.

How do I know if my drains are blocked?

If your drain is blocked you will usually know because your waste will stop going away when you flush the toilet. There will also probably be a smell around drains.
